Initiator: Messe Frankfurt
Location: Frankfurt and the surrounding area
Dear Luminale fans and guests,
It is a special pleasure for me to invite you to the 7th edition of Luminale, the Biennale of Lighting Culture, which accompanies Light+Building, the international architecture fair. Over the coming days, Frankfurt am Main will be the most important meeting place for experts from the sector. In the evening when the sun goes down, the ‘blue hour’ will attract Luminale visitors to the streets and squares of the city, where they can enjoy works of art, design objects, performances and light and sound installations.
During Luminale, the city becomes an experimental proving ground for creative personalities. This laboratory character distinguishes Luminale from the numerous other lighting festivals, many of which have been inspired by the success of Luminale and aim to attract people to the city centre with light. Luminale is the only festival in the world that targets both experts and the general public. At Luminale, visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of lighting designers ‘overnight’ and to see Frankfurt from another, fascinating perspective.
With the Biennale of Lighting Culture, Frankfurt am Main continues to build on its reputation as a city of the modern. The construction sites and numerous projects, from the renovation of the façade of the Main Railway Station, via the new skyscrapers on the skyline, to the new bridge across the River Main towards Offenbach, are characteristic of a city that continues to develop and takes account of social changes and the demands of the future.
I wish you all – trade-fair visitors and citizens – interesting insights and new perspectives in the coming Luminale nights.
Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main
For more than 10 years now, Luminale has been held every two years, alongside the Light+Building trade fair. With its 140,000 visitors at the last event (in 2012), it is now firmly established internationally as the Biennale of Lighting Culture.
Luminale forms the evening programme for the 195,000 or so visitors to Light+Building. The combination of trade fair and city event transforms Frankfurt and its surrounding Rhine-Main region into a unique centre for lighting-related issues and brings together anyone who is anyone in the sector from manufacturers to designers and artists. It is an opportunity to see and be seen; an opportunity that occurs – in this concentrated form, at least – only once every two years during Light+Building. A shuttle service links the trade fair and the city.
Luminale is a platform for ideas and innovations that relate to lighting, energy efficiency, the application of new technologies and materials and to the quality of life in our towns and cities. Participation in Luminale is a tried and tested instrument for gaining public attention.
