Fixation clips offer you a reliable solution for fixation and guidance of cables in vehicles and on profiles. WKK provides high-quality fixation clips developed by our subsidiary WKK Automotive. We supply edge clips (also for corrugated tubing), clips with fir tree or with arrowhead and solar clips. The products are available, with and without cable ties, for various profile thicknesses and hole diameters.

Own production and quality

Our subsidiary WKK Automotive has its own production facility for the development and production of high-quality fixation clips. The clips are made of plastic (polyamide 6.6: heat, weather and impact resistant). You can expect the products to have good impact resistance, heat resistance and tensile strength (if cable ties are supplied). If desired, you can also have custom made clips, developed by us, that meet your specific requirements.

Edge clips with cable ties and/or corrugated tubing

An edge clip is a small plastic fixation clip with a metal clamp, which you can mount on a plastic or metal profile. The product is often used in the automotive industry. Nevertheless, you can use the product wherever you have to deal with cables or corrugated tubing that you want to attach and guide along profiles in an easy way.

The main advantages of edge clips are ease of use (no drilling, welding or gluing needed) and the robustness of the product.

WKK also supplies, if required, the complementary cable ties and corrugated tubing.

Clips with fir tree or with arrowhead

In addition to edge clips, we also have a wide range of clips with fir tree or with arrowhead. These fixation clips are specially designed for mounting of the clip in a drill hole.

Bootlace ferrules

Bootlace ferrules are copper tubes with or without an insulating end sleeve that is attached over the stripped end of an electrical wire. Our bootlace ferrules are available in an insulated and uninsulated version. The polypropylene insulation sleeve makes the bootlace ferrules easy to install and adds extra protection. The products are regularly used with terminal strips, such as an automatic circuit breaker. WKK also sells bootlace ferrule assortment boxes and a crimping tool.

What are bootlace ferrules?

A bootlace ferrule consists of a small tinned copper tube with or without an insulating sleeve made of polypropylene. The product is placed around a cable end and crimped. A bootlace ferrule serves the following purposes:

• A reliable electrical connection; all wire strands conduct current (optimum electrical contact between all copper wires in the core and the terminal where the end is attached)
• No unravelling of wire strands. This is especially crucial for small wires or for wires where the housing is regularly removed
• No spreading of the wire strands after a wire has been clamped in a terminal block or other part
• No breaks in the wire strands in case of bending or tension
• No unwanted contacts in the terminal, which prevents short circuits
• Simple wire feed, especially for wires with a relatively small thickness (for example, 26 to 18 AWG)
  
  

A bootlace ferrule is not the same as a crimp terminal. Crimp terminals connect cables, in a safe way, to other cables or devices to create an electrical connection between certain cable ends. Bootlace ferrules are used for cables that reach one end (think of terminal strips). Therefore, a bootlace ferrule is suitable for optimal electrical contact around applications where open-wire strands can cause problems.

Bootlace ferrules are used in, for example, switch boxes, screw and spring terminals, control units, function units or row and terminal connectors.

How do bootlace ferrules work?

A bootlace ferrule is placed over the end of a stripped cable. Subsequently, with the help of a bootlace ferrule crimping tool (with the correct settings) the sleeve is crimped to the cable. The crimping tool causes the tube to shrink. Afterwards you can mount the end product on, for example, a screw or spring clamp.

With and without insulation sleeve

WKK supplies uninsulated and insulated bootlace ferrules. Insulated bootlace ferrules contain an insulating sleeve made of polypropylene. The sleeve has several advantages, including that the cable end can be easily inserted. Also, the sleeve can provide extra insulation for live parts of an endpoint (clamp) to which the conductor is attached.

The decision for either insulated or uninsulated bootlace ferrules depends on your specific application. If you are not sure which type is suitable for your application(s), please contact one of our advisers. We are happy to assist you.

You choose twin bootlace ferrules when you are dealing with two cable ends that you want to crimp into one ferrule. Twin ferrules contain an insulation sleeve and are therefore insulated.

Dimensions, quality and colors

Bootlace ferrules are available in many sizes. The sizes correspond to certain colors within the assortment of insulated bootlace ferrules. WKK has bootlace ferrules from 26 AWG (0,14 mm2) to 1 AWG (50 mm2).

WKK attaches great importance to the quality of its products. That is why our bootlace ferrules meet the DIN 46228/1 or DIN 46228/4 standards.

Bootlace ferrule crimping tool and assortments

WKK supplies a crimping tool for bootlace ferrules and various assortments. The crimping tool is suitable for both uninsulated and insulated end sleeves from 0.5 to 2.5 mm2. Two assortment boxes are offered: 400 and 900 pieces.

When to use a crimp terminal?

You use crimp terminals when you want to safely connect or disconnect cables to electrical appliances, power or control panels, junction boxes or machines. In addition, they are also used to merge power cables. The product protects devices, cables and people. In most cases, crimp terminals are used for temporary connections, which are easy to disconnect or replace. Permanent installations are also possible but less common.

How does a crimp terminal work?

Crimp terminals offer one of the safest and most commonly used methods for ‘closing’ cables. The product is developed to make cable termination and removal for maintenance or repair very easy.

The electrical cable transfers electrical power to, for example, an electrical device or control panel. The crimp terminal ensures a secure connection. It is important that the cable size and electrical capacity of the connector are correct. If the connection or current capacity is incorrect, a short circuit or a leak may occur. This may result in damage to a machine, device or even endanger the technician.

Crimp terminals and bootlace ferrules are not the same. In principle, both product groups have the same global goals (protection and guidance). However, the applications are different. A crimp terminal connects cables to other cables or devices in order to safely extend the electrical connection between various ends. A bootlace ferrule, on the other hand, is used for cables that reach a final destination (screw terminals, such as a terminal block or automatic circuit breaker). In addition, the connector of a bootlace ferrule is crimped, in case of a crimp terminal it is the insulation sleeve.

Different types: uninsulated and insulated crimp terminals

WKK supplies different types of crimp terminals: uninsulated and insulated. In a limited environment or in a system where cables are close together, you should use insulated crimp terminals. Otherwise there is a risk of a short circuit between the cables.

Uninsulated crimp terminals are used for locations where there is a lot of space or when a large ‘area’ needs to be supplied with electricity or an electrical signal. Uninsulated crimp terminals are a cheaper solution than insulated variants. You can also insulate uninsulated crimp terminals afterwards (watertight) with heat shrink tubing.

Material of the connector

A crimp terminal has a connector with an optional (full) insulation piece. WKK supplies connectors in copper and brass. The insulation material consists of PVC, nylon or polyolefin.

The connector material selection depends on your specific application. Copper, for example, is a better electrical conductor than brass. Brass, on the other hand, is more resistant to corrosion than copper.

Insulation options

PVC insulated crimp terminals are the most common and protect against short circuits. The PVC and the copper connector are shrunk to make the connection to a wire.

The nylon insulated option is shrunk on the wire and on the wire insulation. This results in an improved pull-out strength of the crimp terminal. This variant is ideal for heavy industrial applications, because the shrinkage ensures extra protection.

The polyolefin insulated variant uses plastic and adhesive which insulates the connection. After shrinking or soldering the connection, a heat gun is used to shrink the insulation around the wire. The adhesive provides a water-tight and moisture-tight seal. This method is ideal for applications where dust and moisture can endanger the connection.

Colors and sizes

The WKK assortment consists of three colors that correspond to a certain size. You will also find the colors on the crimp tools. WKK supplies crimp tools in the colors:

• Red: wire range 0.5 ~ 1.5 mm2, AWG 22 ~ 16
• Blue: wire range 1.5 ~ 2.5 mm2, AWG 16 ~ 14
• Yellow: wire range 4.0 ~ 6.0 mm2, AWG 12 ~ 10

Highlighted types and applications

Frequently sold crimp terminal types are ring, spade and pin terminals. Below you will find the most commonly used application per type:

Ring terminals and spade terminals are often used with a screw (e.g. on a battery). Ring terminals are often used in the automotive industry and are ideal for connecting a mechanical relay or for connecting contactors to engines or other car circuits. A spade terminal is ideal for applications where the ring does not fit around the screw due to an obstacle. A pin terminal is used for applications with a plug connection.
