Klein Tools was founded in 1857 by a German immigrant, Mathias Klein. His tools business started when a broken side cutter was taken to his shop. Mathias repaired the pliers by forging a new half of the pliers and riveting them together with the old half. Shortly thereafter, the customer came back because the other original pliers half was broken and he needed replacement. Mathias forged the second half of the pliers and riveted them with the other spare half - this was the first complete "small" pliers.
