Nichia Corporation

H6 Series LED

Description

A new era of LED adoption by delivering the industry's highest joint-boost in color quality and efficacy

The H6 Series of LEDs has been commercialized by Nichia through its expertise and technology in phosphors and LEDs, as well as its 50+ years engagement in "LIGHT" focused on the "quality of light". By combining phosphor and LED technologies, Nichia optimized the light spectrum with a unique red narrow band phosphor technology creating a technology breakthrough, overcoming the trade-off between efficacy and CRI, by delivering the industry's highest joint-boost in color quality and efficacy. It ushers in a new era of LED adoption, one where the focus on quality of light can take center stage. The portfolio expands from Mid Power to COB and can be used in a wide range of applications such as shops, offices, residences, and healthcare facilities.

Over the past 10 years, there has been a shift in light sources from fluorescent to LED; however, achieving both color quality and luminous efficacy has remained a major challenge. The rapid adoption of LED lighting in Japan was spurred by the power shortage after the Great East Japan earthquake in 2011. Naturally the priority was then set on luminous efficiency and energy savings to overcome the power shortage. The technology at that time could not deliver the high level of luminous efficacy and high color rendering which had been in place with tricolor fluorescent lamps. The H6 Series of LEDs from Nichia are the answer to this remaining challenge, and they have been receiving high recognition and awards.

Human Centric Lighting (Dynasolis™)

The combination of the energizing azure (sky blue) and a peaceful, calming warm white hue

Recently, the influence of natural light on the human body and its influence has been drawing attention, and its importance has been reaffirmed. It is believed that the insomnia and other physical disorders that a large number of people suffer from today can be attributed to modern lifestyles that make it difficult to get enough natural light. The building industry is increasingly encouraging designs that bring more natural light indoors. In the field of lighting, another major challenge is how to realize light and lighting environments that are comfortable for humans and therefore, so-called human centric lighting and circadian lighting have been gaining attention. There is a movement to require designs for indoor lighting with a new concept that focuses on the “quality of light” and the “function of light”.

What has been lacking in conventional indoor lighting is 480nm light, which is abundant in the morning sun. This 480nm light stimulates the secretion of serotonin, the “happy hormone,” and activates the human body and mind. The more serotonin secreted in the morning, the more melatonin, a sleep hormone, is secreted 14 to 16 hours later, using it as a source. Thus, 480nm light is considered as very important by having a twofold significance.
Focusing on this 480nm light, Nichia proposes Azure color LEDs that can effectively supply the light of that wavelength, and Dynasolis™, a color and spectrum tuning solution that is achieved by using Azure color LEDs.

Conventional color tuning lighting has used mainly 6500K LEDs on the high CCT side and 2700K LEDs on the low CCT side. Dynasolis™, which has the high CCT side replaced with Azure LEDs, can maximize the melanopic illuminance by increasing the output at 480nm, thereby stimulating physical and mental activation from awakening in the morning and melatonin secretion in the evening and beyond. Furthermore, by gradually reducing Azure-colored light and changing to the lower CCT, it is possible to produce light that gives a sense of comfort. Nichia approaches the adjustment of circadian rhythms from the perspective of spectrum tuning.

HPS color LED

True alternative to HPS contributing to the realization of a sustainable society

An HPS color LED is an LED that genuinely reproduces the emission color of High Pressure Sodium lamps (HPS), which is most often used for road lighting and outdoor lighting around the world. As a true alternative technology to mercury-containing HPS, it will contribute to the realization of a mercury-free society and carbon neutrality.

In street and outdoor lighting, the use of LEDs has been increasing over the past decade or so due to their high efficiency and long life; however, in residential areas and the center of town, there are cases where the switch to LEDs is not being made because there is a concern that the bluish white light of LEDs may change the familiar landscape and atmosphere.

In some extreme cases, street lights that were once converted to LED have been changed back to HPS due to demands from residents. In addition, attention has been drawn to so-called "light pollution", such as sleep disturbance due to excessive glare, inability to see the stars because of the dim night skies, and adverse effects not only on humans but also on the ecosystem including insects.

Nichia's HPS color LEDs can significantly change this situation. While they have the same emission color delivered by HPS, HPS color LEDs would not change the landscape and atmosphere. In addition, it reduces the light pollution caused by the higher CCT LEDs. Thus, it can be expected to accelerate the smooth shift to LEDs in cases where the switch to LEDs have not progressed due to the emission color.
