New date: Light + Building Autumn Edition 2022
As the pandemic situation continues to develop very dynamically, Messe Frankfurt is postponing the world's leading trade fair for light and building technology to autumn 2022. Last December, intensive discussions with customers and cooperation partners had already led to the examination of alternatives to the original date in March. Now the new date has been set: Light + Building Autumn Edition will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 2 to 6 October 2022.
Always knowing what’s coming next: Predictive Maintenance
Whether in the healthcare, elevator and escalator or heating sectors, regular checks promise early detection of defects or impending failures. In the lighting and building sector, new technologies enable components to connect with each other and data to be collected continuously. This can be achieved through predictive maintenance – one of the top themes at Light + Building 2022. For instance, regular monitoring helps to estimate when hardware components need to be replaced or energy efficiencies are not being used optimally.
Focus on connected Security at Light + Building 2022
Security is a need whose importance in society is continuously increasing. Whether digital threats, extreme weather conditions or health risks - one crisis is followed by another. Accordingly, the demand for security technology equipment and systems for homes and buildings is increasing. As the leading national and international industry platform, the topic of "connected security" also plays a central role at Light + Building 2022.
Light + Building 2022: Countdown is running
"Breaking new ground" – this is the motto for the reunion at Light + Building from 13 to 18 March 2022. The new concept is in place and preparations are in full swing. In future, face-to-face meetings on the exhibition grounds will be possible, but also digital encounters.
Digitalisation, infrastructure expansion and the pandemic: upheaval in the planning and construction sector
From planning and building to the operating phase, numerous people work together over the life cycle of a construction project. Throughout, digital technologies have an enormous potential for exactly coordinated timing, improved quality assurance and cost reductions.
Luminale: Biennale for Light Art and Urban Design to pause in 2022
Since 2002, the Luminale festival in the German cities of Frankfurt and Offenbach has accompanied Light + Building, the world's leading trade fair for light and building services technology, which takes place every two years in Frankfurt am Main. Initiated by Messe Frankfurt as a "bridge from the exhibition grounds to the city", the public event has since developed into an internationally recognised light and culture festival with over 250,000 visitors. Messe Frankfurt as the organiser holds all trademarks and funds the project office, the promotion of Luminale and a beacon project. Due to Messe Frankfurt's economic situation, this is not viable for 2022. Therefore, the will not take place in 2022.
The impact of light
An interview with Dr Jürgen Waldorf, Managing Director of the Lighting Division of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI)
Light + Building Digital Extension: the new digital features of Light + Building 2022
How will we live, work and get around in the future? What have we learnt from recent experiences and how can we combine these lessons with existing knowledge? In this case, innovation is the key. Physical encounters are the core of every fair. Today, however, a variety of digital experiences have been made. So how will trade fairs develop in the future?
Health and light: clean, energy efficient and people-centred
Whether natural growth, optimum conditions for concentrating or staying healthy, light has a variety of operating mechanisms. It influences the body’s messenger substances and ensures the inner clock keeps time. The wavelength of the light used is decisive for the application concerned.
In contact all year – the Light + Building Contactor
Crises boost creativity. Useful products emerge in the search for new solutions. In this respect, 2020 was a highly creative year – and this includes the trade-fair sector. On the one hand, it showed just how important personal encounters are. On the other hand, this creativity resulted in many new forms of interaction. An interview with Light + Building Brand Manager Johannes Möller about working from home, the yearning for personal encounters and digital reach.
Cutting edge and future oriented: the top themes of Light + Building
Yesterday experimental, today a practical everyday application: the growing pace of digitalisation is generating chances, new opportunities and challenges. Innovative ideas are welcome and there is a great willingness to try something new. Nevertheless, the increasing use of digital communication solutions is leading to a greater appreciation of tried and tested products.
Architects of our own destiny: the new normal
What to do when a global crisis causes sales to plummet? Hope, wait, ruminate? Make a virtue of necessity, take anticyclical steps – slogans are two a penny nowadays. In many cases, however, the appropriate follow-up actions are not mentioned.
Breaking New Ground
It all revolved around bits and bytes. The sector used the last season as an ideas booster. And focused exclusively on the digital sphere. With intensive use being made of its special capabilities as an interface. At the same time, the digital sphere can only be as successful as its physical basis.
Style as a therapy
From entertaining to curative – sensory impressions are no less important for the soul than the interior. The challenge: stimuli must continuously be generated anew.
Architecture+Technology Innovation Award
Design, texture, mood, body and function – the key factors with which luminaires, lighting components, electrical technology and house and building automation influenced the judges were many, varied and, in some cases, surprising.
The show goes on
The past months have been more than challenging. Now, however, it almost feels as though spring is in the air with exhibitors and visitors in Shanghai enjoying a refreshing renewal of personal contacts and boosting business via a wealth of product innovations. With detailed hygiene concepts, the concurrent Shanghai Intelligent Building Technology, Shanghai Smart Home Technology and Parking China opened their doors in the Chinese metropolis between 2 and 4 September. These three events are Asia’s first building-technologies trade fairs to once again welcome visitors in Corona Year Zero.
Light + Building expands the digital sphere
Never before has ‘digital space’ been so valuable. Besides all the negative consequences, the corona virus has also generated an impulse that many have been waiting for. After all, users find it difficult to choose from the great variety of relevant offers. The spectrum is broad and, in many cases, credibility questionable to a certain extent – especially when it comes to obtaining first-hand information relating to the sector. At the same time, there can be no doubt: personal encounters are irreplaceable.
Light + Building: What was, what is, and what will be?
As of July 2020 Maria Hasselman has passed on the baton for Light + Building to Johannes Möller. And – just as it should be in high-performance sport – at a sprint. Nevertheless, the present and future head of this leading international trade fair have taken some time out – to give an interview, together.

Functional aesthetics – when light beams take over from lamps
It is sometimes quite nice if details remain unseen. According to the maxim of the now hundred-year-old Bauhaus movement, both internal and external architecture can be enhanced when ‘form follows function’. This effect is particularly visible where lighting is concerned. Along with the strategic use of windows or light shafts, cleverly placed light sources are, therefore, increasingly taking on the job of light provision. Thanks to high-efficiency LED technology, such light sources are already almost without housing and no longer have any kind of form of their own. Leaving the focus on the light itself.
XaaS – What’s that? New business models on the upswing
Products and services in the field of lighting and building-services technology are increasingly being marketed in the form of subscription models. Known as ‘X as a Service’ (XaaS), ‘Light as a Service’ (LaaS), ‘Security as a Service’ and ‘Safety as a Service’, this trend offers benefits for both providers and customers. Digitalisation is not only driving this development but also giving rise to new business models. Light + Building, the leading trade fair for the sector, will put the spotlight on the innovations when it opens its doors in Frankfurt am Main from 8 to 13 March.
BIM: more efficient processes through digitalisation
Building information modeling (BIM), the IT-supported working method, is gaining increasingly in importance. BIM is being increasingly employed particularly in the design of building technology and in the process of maintenance during the operational stage. This ensures more efficient workflows, shorter planning and construction times, and better collaboration between all those involved. Light + Building, the leading international trade fair, will be providing an overview of the BIM process in Frankfurt am Main from 8 to 13 March 2020.
Connectivity offers efficiency, safety, security and convenience of tomorrow’s urban spaces
More and more people are moving into cities. And the growing shortage of space and resources is a huge challenge for municipalities. The smart city – a connected and intelligent conurbation – is a solution to these problems. The use of digital technologies makes cities safer, more efficient and increasingly sustainable. Light + Building 2020, the world’s leading trade fair for the sector in Frankfurt, presents products for the smart city and provides a platform for smart building automation, intelligent energy management and connected safety and security.

At the same time, e-mobility can make an important contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions and is thus a key to achieving climate goals. According to calculations by the National Platform for Electrical Mobility, the number of electrical vehicles in Germany is expected to rise to between 7 and 10.5 million by 2030.
Intelligent, connected and secure: smart buildings open up new possibilities
Increasing urbanisation and the necessity of conserving resources demand intelligent, connected building services in so-called ‘smart buildings’. Once the digital control systems are intelligently interlinked, they can make buildings more economic and more secure, as well as reducing their energy needs. Solutions for this will be on show at the world’s leading trade fair in its field, Light + Building, in Frankfurt am Main from 8 to 13 March 2020.
