After exploring numerous principles of transformation, the pendant luminaire diff:o was created, offering two distinct light qualities: a direct, focused spotlight and a soft, diffuse light. The change in light quality is linked to an intuitive analogue gesture: by pulling on the soft textile diffuser, the light source moves from one side of the luminaire to the other – it is literally “drawn” into the object.
The more the fabric is stretched, the more brightly the soft light fills the expanding diffuser cone. When the movement is reversed, the diffuser transforms back into a flat textile surface, pressing the light downwards into a focused beam.
The two forms of the diffuser – flat and clearly defined for directed light, or voluminous and soft for diffuse light – directly correspond to the emitted light quality. diff:o makes the principles of light diffusion and dimming tangible and creates a playful way to alter light directly.
This project was developed as a group work by Luke Frommann and Julia Huhnholz.
Luke Frommann is a young Berlin-based designer currently studying Product Design at the weißensee academy of art berlin. His previous work primarily includes luminaires, furniture and personal everyday objects. In recent years, his practice has increasingly focused on physical interaction, aiming to restore a tangible, real quality to the use of everyday objects. He approaches product design by considering the processes and contexts in which products are used, imagining specific usage scenarios. It is precisely here that he intervenes: he consciously seeks to influence how his designs are experienced.
Luke Frommann is currently completing an internship at Studio Mark Braun in Berlin.
Julia Huhnholz is a product designer with a strong passion for exploring future materials. Following her exploratory approach, she enjoys experimenting across disciplines and questioning and “hacking” existing processes. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin while working as a freelance designer at WINT Design Lab. Previously, she completed her Bachelor’s degree at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and spent a semester abroad at Design Academy Eindhoven. In the field of product design, Julia Huhnholz also completed an internship at Studio Mark Braun.
