Light is a constant in our lives. It structures our day, influences our state of activation, and creates orientation, atmosphere and a sense of security. A glance into illuminated homes in the evening reveals how routinely and often unconsciously it is used. At the press of a button, spaces can be flooded with bright light or saturated in a wide range of colours.

Technically, light is always accessible in varying intensities and colour temperatures. Its physical and psychological effects, however, often remain unconsidered.

The illuminated tile responds to this condition. In its resting state it is dimmed and remains restrained within the space. As a person approaches, the luminous porcelain body moves a few centimetres forward from its original position and increases in brightness. As distance increases, the lamp returns to its original position and the light softens. The technical construction remains concealed. What becomes perceptible is the shifting position of the luminous body and the changing light cone.

It applies light in a deliberate and situational manner. The starting point is the tile as one of the oldest architectural elements. By becoming a light source, its role shifts from a purely functional building component to an element that actively responds to human presence. The illuminated tile is my attempt to bring light closer to the body and to shape it as a conscious, perceptible relationship within space.

Conscious and unconscious impressions affect our perceptions and shape the way we perceive and use spaces and their contents. With this in mind, I examine everyday norms and their influence on usage and atmosphere in order to shape them in a purposeful way. My interdisciplinary interests enable me to work in different areas of design and to combine visual communication, photography, graphic design and product design. An isolated focus on a single discipline does not correspond to my understanding of design. What is crucial is the interplay of different design levels and their combined impact in the space.
